Timely access to innovative treatments is crucial for those living with cancer. However, for Candians with cancer, the approval process for such treatments can be lengthy and complex. When every day counts for Canadians living with cancer, accelerated access to those therapies that bring added value to patients and society, without compromising on careful deliberations and evidence-based decision-making is needed. This week, both #saskatchewan and #britishcolumbia announced plans for provincial #cartcelltherapy programs.

Saskatchewan and British Columbia join Quebec, Ontario, Alberta and Nova Scotia is providing CAR-T in province.

This is wonderful news for people living in those provinces with blood cancer and who are eligible to receive CAR-T.

A major accomplishment for both provinces who are committed to treating patients closer to home.

Thank you to @lymphomacanada @myeloma_canada, Ac2orn and @llscanada for supporting the advocacy efforts we have all been working so hard to achieve.

tomorrow is #worldcancerday. @cancercolab is calling on premiers across canada to make cancer a political priority ahead of meeting with the prime minister on feb7 where health will be on the agenda. money transfers are not enough to make significant change for Canadians and their families living with cancer. we need real change and political will from our leaders.

the pandemic has highlighted the gaps in our healthcare system. its time to put cancer on the agenda.

health ministers from across the country meet in vancouver and the #canceractionnow alliance is calling on them to
1. Commit to address backlogs in cancer diagnosis and care by increasing cancer screening and treatment capacity by at least 10% over pre-pandemic levels for a period of three years to regain ground we have lost due to the interruptions caused by the pandemic. This figure is in consensus with research conducted by the McGill Task Force on the Impact of COVID-19 on Cancer Control and Care.
2. Commit new investments in health care to the improvement of measurable value-based patient outcomes in cancer with meaningful input from cancer stakeholders including patient and caregiver representatives.
3.Use the Federal / Provincial / Territorial structure to convene a pan-Canadian working group to address the issues impacting cancer delivery systems.

the ultimate goal of cancer treatment is to give patients the best possible outcome - with the least amount of side effects, the most quality of life and the least amount of time in hospital - whether that means in doctor’s visits, trying to new treatments or in emergency rooms due to side effects

we talk about the importance of biomarker testing

we talk about the importance of biomarker testing to get to the right treatment, to diminish toxic side effects caused by unnecessary treatments and the reduction of resources being used by healthcare systems when the right treatment is given. these are important aspects of conversation when speaking with decision makers, policy makers and payors.

often though, patient priorities don’t match with the priorities of payors, policy makers and decision makers and so the social aspects of a patients life, intimacy, mental health - these aren’t always top of mind - for example when we discuss the importance of getting cancer patients tested for biomarkers.

quality of life is important, survivorship is important, reduced side effects are important- but the other things are important too - and that makes biomarker testing so much more necessary as a routine part of cancer care.
